The General Labour Inspectorate (GLI) is an executive agency, part of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, which controls the compliance with the labour legislation, health and safety regulations in all spheres of employment and in all related activities.

How can it help you

If you believe that your rights as an employee have been violated, you can complain to one of the territorial directorates of the GLI or to its central office. You can complain about a violation of the employment legislation of which you are a victim or send a signal for such a violation if you have information of which somebody else has been a victim or if there is no victim at all. The General Labour Inspectorate maintains an online application form on their Internet site. The GLI can initiate an investigation into the facts you submit, issue obligatory prescriptions to the employer and/or impose an administrative punishment. This does not prevent you from seeking compensation for the damage caused through the court.

Activities

  • Investigates signals and situations of possible violations of labour legislation. In the course of these investigations the GLI inspectors can:
  1. visit ministries, other departments, businesses and places of work at any time, as well as the premises used by the employees
  2. require from the employer explanations, information and submission of all necessary documents
  3. meet with employees and collect written and other explanations from them
  4. use technical means and instruments for measurement
  5. take samples and other similar materials for laboratory tests and analyzes
  6. investigate and identify the causes and circumstances in which work accidents have occurred
  • Issues obligatory prescriptions related to violations of the labour law and safety regulations to employers
  • Stops putting into operation of buildings, machinery and equipment, productions and sites, if the rules on health and safety at work and social services are not complied with
  • Stops the operation of enterprises, productions and sites, as well as machinery, equipment and workplaces where violations of the rules on health and safety at work endanger the lives and health of employees
  • Imposes administrative punishments for violations of labour law and of health and safety regulations
