The Access to Information Program Foundation is a non-governmental organisation founded in 1996 with the mission of supporting the exercise of the right to information set out in Article 41 of the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria. It encourages the search for information through education, advocates for easier access to information, and works for transparency of management at different levels.
How can it help you
The Access to Information Program offers citizens, journalists, NGOs and businesses legal assistance and representation at every stage of the process when seeking public information. Activities
- The organisation provides legal assistance in individual cases concerning the right to access to information
- Organises workshops, seminars and conferences on access to information
- Holds specialised freedom-of-information trainings for civil servants and local administration officials, journalists, and nongovernmental organizations
- Prepares and publishes handbooks on how to exercise the right of access to information, as well as publications clarifying particular aspects of the access to information legislation
- Monitors the freedom of information legislation in Bulgaria and participates in debates for compliance with international standards in the area
- Works with an established network of journalists in regional cities throughout the country that monitors the access to information implementation practices and gives recommendations for their improvement
- Prepares and performs special access to information surveys
- Provides consultations on cases concerning access to information
- Works to raise public awareness on the right of access to information through the media, publicly expresses opinions on current problems
